Welcome to the Future: Photosynth

Take a look at this incredible tech demonstration from TED of Photosynth. The initial demonstration of the image handling architecture called Seadragon is striking enough - showing an electronic mock-up of the Guardian Magazine in multi-scalar view similar to an actual physical copy.  The Seadragon technology completely ignores conventional ideas of screen resolution and screen area resulting in a fundamentally new way of looking at digital mediums. This new view is clearly demonstrated in the Notre Dame Catherdral presentation which was compiled entirely from images scraped from Flickr. The images range in quality from cellphone snapshots to professional SLR images and Photosynth relates all the images spatially, building an interactive environment more detailed than any other image set online and more revealing than even a ‘VR tour’. The result is a striking new technology that will change the informational landscape over the next few years taking data from the entire collection of images available online and creating a result much much greater than the sum of the parts.  Welcome to the future.
